So many Techniques!

AKA: What Are All These Fancy Shirt-Making Techniques?

When you shop at Lisa Wyatt Designs, you’ll notice not every t-shirt or gift item is made using the same method — and that’s entirely intentional!

I use a range of professional techniques depending on the fabric, finish, and feel you’re after. Today, I’m breaking down three of the most common methods I use: DTF Printing, Sublimation, and HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl).

DTF (Direct to Film) Printing

Best for: Full-colour logos, slogans, and designs on both light and dark fabrics.

DTF is a relatively new and very exciting technique! Your design is printed onto a special film, coated in a powder adhesive, and then heat-pressed onto your item. The result? Bold colours, crisp detail, and a finish that’s soft to the touch.

✅ Ideal for:

  • Intricate artwork or multi-colour prints
  • Both cotton and polyblend fabrics

Long-lasting wear — great for hoodies and workwear

 Sublimation Printing

Best for: Light-coloured polyester items (like mugs, coasters, and certain tees).

With sublimation, the ink becomes part of the material — literally. The heat turns the ink into a gas that embeds into the fibres or coating. No peeling, no cracking — just permanent, vivid colour.

✅ Ideal for:

  • White or light-coloured polyester garments
  • Hard surfaces like mugs and signs

A lightweight, smooth finish with zero texture

HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl)

Best for: Bold, simple designs or standout slogan text.

HTV is cut from coloured vinyl sheets, then applied to fabric using heat and pressure. It’s perfect when you want a strong visual statement or textured finish, like glitter, metallic, or flock.

✅ Ideal for:

  • Slogan t-shirts and team names
  • One-off designs or small batches
  • Fun, textured finishes like glitter or neon

So Many Techniques – So, Which One Is Right for You?

That depends on:

                    • The fabric of your item
                    • The style and complexity of your design
                    • How many items you need
                    • And the finish you’re after

The good news? I’ll always choose the best method to suit your order — so your product looks great and lasts!
